New Post:  Room at the Table: Comments on Women’s Rights
From the post:

As the Arab Spring spread like wildfire, as men and women young and old bravely fought for the promise of a better tomorrow, we watched in awe. Yet, the promise of equity in government still seems far from reality. To date, Egypt has appointed one woman to sit on the newly minted 27-member cabinet. As such, the same women that led the revolution are expected to allow men to make decisions for them. This is not the democracy for which they fought.

Worth Reading:  Modern Day Slavery
From the post:

Slavery Footprint is a new online and mobile phone app that can calculate how many low or no wage workers toil away to produce your favorite consumer gadgets. The app’s process is fairly simple: it analyzes your habits, consumer spending and living environment. Its creators hope to raise awareness about forced labor, which they sum up as a “modern day slave trade.”

About Reality Unkempt

We live in a world searching for a common narrative, single stories by which we can all identify: the “black experience,” the “greatest generation,” a common set of “American values.” In that treacherous pursuit, we leave the histories and contributions of the overwhelming majority of human experience crumbled by the wayside. So much of what makes all of us who we are is long forgotten or maliciously erased from recorded history by a wicked few so that they may lay claim to an achievement more accurately attributed to others.

We are not now, nor have we ever been a homogeneous people. In fact, it is in the diversity and nuance of our lives where we find our greatest strengths and not our deepest flaws. Reality Unkempt seeks to capture those lost narratives while creating a safe space for people to organize around their political, cultural and social desires. Perhaps if we come to realize that what makes us different makes us great, we might appreciate the value of the individual to the collective rather than designing a collective to capture all individuals.
